A new method for synthesizing 1,2-bis(3,4-dimethyl phenyl)ethane is pre-sented in this article.3,4-dimethyl benzyl chloride is prepared from1,2-dimethyl benzene by Blanc chloromethylation reaction,then the objective product 1,2-bis(3,4-dimethyl phenyl)ethane is prepared by reductive coupling reaction in water using iron powder as catalyst and Cu2Cl2 as co-catalyst.This method could get a highpurity product of 99.6% and the yield is 82%.
