The microstructure of ethylene cracking furnace coke which came from an inland ethylene plant was investigated In a coke combustion reactor which chiefly included a coke combustion furnace, an electro thermometer, an oxygen tank, an oxygen controller, and an oxygen flowmeter, the combustion characteristics of ethylene cracking furnace coke and the effects of temperature and oxygen concentration as two important factors on coke combustion process were studied The results showed that the ethylene cracking furnace coke was lack of volatile and there was more than 98% C while only a few H in coke sample The microstructure of the ethylene cracking furnace coke was similar with that of 2H graphite The effect of combustion temperature was much greater than oxygen concentration in the process of ethylene coke combustion Measures were suggested to speed up the ethylene cracking furnace coke combustion speed: 1 Because the combustion rate of the ethylene cracking furnace coke was affected mainly by combustion temperature while not by oxygen concentration, the temperature of ethylene cracking furnace could be increased to expedite the coke combustion rate; 2 In order to reduce the combustion reaction energy, some appropriate combustion aid could be added into ethylene cracking furnace to conduce to coke combustion reaction occurring at a lower temperature If these means are used in industrial production, energy will be plentifully saved and great benefits will be
