Hainan Island is located in the tropical--subtropical zone with a lot of coral reefs and mangroves. There exists a variety of marine fishes and fisheries resources. Before 1986, 589 species of marine fishes from the coast of Hainan Island had been reported. Based on the samples collected during the China-Germany Expedition to Hainan Island in 1990 and the 1992 samples, we present in this Paper a supplemental list of 218 other species, including sampling location. The order Gobiesociformes and 17 families are firstly reported from Hainan Island. So far, a total of 807 species from Hainan Island have been recorded, belonging to 27 orders, 153 familes.
The blennioid fishes of the suborder Blennioidei are widely distributed in Chinese coastal waters and the Indo-west Pacific. The fauna composition of the blennioid fishes from Chinese waters is represented by 8 families, 33 genera and 78 species. The Chinese blennioid fishes comprise three species types: warm-water, warm-temperate and cold-temperate.The warm-water fishes are large in number, comprise 40 species (51.3% of the total). The warm-temperate fishes are fewer, comprise 28 species (35.9% of the total). The cold-temperate fishes are fewest in number, comprise 10 species (12.8% of the total).According to the geographical distributional character, all the Chinese blennioid fishes are grouped into four types: (1) the circumtropical-subtropical type, with 2 species (2.6% of the total); (2) the Indo-West Pacific type, with 24 species (30.8% of the total); (3) the West-Pacific type, with 51 species (65.3% of the total); (4) the endemic type of Chinese waters, with only 1 species (1.3% of the total).
Eighteen morphological characters (six meristic and twelve morphometric) were selected for the study of numerical taxonomy in eight species of Chinese mojarras. Based on the cluster analysis, a dendrogram of the eight species was obtained (Fig.1). The present paper also dealt with the comparison between numerical taxonomy and morphological classification in Chinese mojarras.
