We study liquid-vapor phase separation under shear via the Shan-Chen lattice Boltzmann model. Besides the rheological characteristics, we analyze the Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability resulting from the tangential velocity difference of the fluids on two sides of the interface. We discuss also the growth behavior of droplets. The domains being close to the walls are lamellar-ordered, where the hydrodynamic effects dominate. The patterns in the bulk of the system are nearly isotropic, where the domain growth results mainly from the diffusion mechanism. Both the interfacial tension and the K-H instability make the liquid-bands near the walls tend to rupture. When the shear rate increases, the inequivalence of evaporation in the upstream and coagulation in the downstream of the flow as well as the role of surface tension make the droplets elongate obliquely. Stronger convection makes easier the transferring of material particles so that droplets become larger.
The physical fields in porous materials under strong shock wave reaction are very complicated. We simulate such systems using the grain contact material point method. The complex temperature fields in the material are treated with the morphological characterization. To compare the structures and evolution of characteristic regimes under various temperature thresholds, we introduce two concepts, structure similarity and process similarity. It is found that the temperature pattern dynamics may show high similarity under various conditions. Within the same material, the structures and evolution of high-temperature regimes may show high similarity if the shock strength and temperature threshold are chosen appropriately. For process similarity in materials with high porosity, the required temperature threshold increases parabolically with the impact velocity. When the porosity becomes lower, the increasing rate becomes higher. For process similarity in different materials, the required temperature threshold and the porosity follow a power-law relationship in some range.
Based on the thermodynamics theory and physical micro-properties of solid materials subjected to external loading at room temperature,a formula of calculating temperature difference of infrared radiation in terms of the sum of three principal strains was deduced to quantitatively investigate the infrared radiation characteristics in test. Two typical specimens, the three-point bending beam and the disc pressed in diameter, were tested and their principal strains were calculated by finite element method in order to obtain the temperature differences of infrared radiation. Numerical results are in a good agreement with test results, which verifies the validity of the formula of calculating temperature differences of infrared radiation and the model of quantitatively describing the infrared radiation characteristics of solid materials, and reveals the corresponding inner physical mechanism.
